PAAM Membership
Anthroposophic medicine is not an alternative to, but rather an extension of conventional medicine. Physicians must undergo complete conventional medical training and licensure. Intensive post-graduate courses are sponsored by PAAM. There are regional study groups, conferences, seminars and other activities. Individual preceptorships can usually be arranged with a more experienced physician trained in Anthroposophic Medicine.
Concentrated training opportunities are available in Europe, where several large hospitals employ this approach. In Switzerland, a 5 week didactic course in English is held annually in September at the Lukas Klinik, an Anthroposophic hospital.
After meeting the certification criteria, the physician trained in Anthroposophic medicine can take an exam to become a diplomate of the Board of Anthroposophical Medicine of North America.
Who Can Join PAAM?
Any physician (M.D. or D.O.) who wishes to support Anthroposophic Medicine is welcome to join. Student membership is available to medical students. As PAAM is a non-profit organization, membership fees are fully tax deductible.
What Are Some of the Applications of Anthroposophic Medicine?
The anthroposophic approach to medicine also includes a unique approach to cancer treatment. Based on indications from Rudolf Steiner in the early part of the 20th century, a mistletoe remedy has been researched and used for more than 80 years. The focus is on strengthening the patient and specifically the patient's immune system as would be designated in conventional medical thinking to address the tumor. The treatment is well tolerated and has been shown to be of great benefit in the overall quality of life for patients at all stages of cancer treatment. This treatment is done by those anthroposophical physicians with special training and experience with the preparations.
