Certification

How do I become certified as an anthroposophic doctor?

Every health profession can be deepened and extended through new therapeutic methods and insights based on anthroposophy, that is, modern wisdom about the human being. For certain professions, a certification process already exists in the United States.  For others, certification has yet to be created here.

Medical doctors:  we have a certification process for medical doctors (MD/DO), which is described below.

What are the certification criteria for medical doctors?

1. Licensed to practice medicine in the U.S. or Canada

2. High moral and ethical standing

3. Engaged in developing his/her soul and spiritual faculties and continuing to broaden his or her knowledge.

4. One year’s full-time or three years’ part-time study of the basics of anthroposophy and anthroposophic medicine, or the five-year IPMT course.  This criterion is individualized.

5. Two years’ practical further training at an anthroposophic clinic or hospital, an anthroposophic medical practice, or in the applicant’s own practice under a recognized mentor.

6. Final exam consisting of submission and discussion of two cases,  showing ability to handle the basics of anthroposophic medicine independently.

Other health professionals: there are certification processes and trainings here in the US, for:   licensed massage therapists, movement therapists (eurythmy therapy and spacial dynamics), and music therapists.  Nurse-Practitioners and Physician Assistants can be certified, according to the same criteria as physicians; they will be certified as “anthroposophic nurse-practitioners”  or “anthroposophic physician-assistants.”

Other health professionals, such as nurses, and art therapists, can be certified internationally.  For still others, for example naturopathic doctors and chiropractors, no specific path towards certification exists as of yet.

If there is no specific certification process in the US at this time for your health profession, please contact the Medical Section at the Goetheanum in Switzerland, the international headquarters for anthroposophic medicine and therapy:
